Is it normal for a sbc that has the wrist pins run through the oil ring lands to use oil? I have noticed that after a 30 or so mile drive the oil level will be down about a half-quart. My old short block didn't use oil like this, but it was a shorter stroke 5.7 rod motor. Any one else see this happening with theirs?

Big stroke motors can eat a little oil sometimes. I have never had one go through that much though. I would do a leak down on it and make sure the rings sealed good.

Unfortunately, a leak-down will not normally show anything if you have an oil usage problem. In fact you will sometimes get better leak numbers That said, I have a lot of engines with the support rail & they do not cause issues that I have seen. I have two "long rod" 489's in motor homes on propane, one of which I know has over 80,000 on it & it has no problems last I heard,,, Have you checked the simple things like the intake, rocker studs if they go into the ports etc. ? Last engine I had oil problems with was a 400 sb & ended up pulling it apart, ball-honing the cylinders & throwing rings in & it cured the problem but I to this day do not know what caused the problem for a fact,,,

thanks Mike; haven't looked into anything yet. I did have an intake leak on one several years ago, but that ended up being a machining defect on the mating surface of the intake. This intake has been on a few different motors with no problems. That being said, it is still a possibility, though. Was really wondering if the support rails have caused anyone any issues like this, as this is my first motor that uses them. Thanks again...
