I have a set of nearly new Dart Pro 1 230 heads and am wondering if it would be better to sell them and buy a better head but I want to keep it on pump gas for street use. I have considered having my heads ported but don't know if the money is worth putting into the heads or buying new ones. If anyone from CFM can help with this I would greatly appreciate it. Also I would like to keep a 23* valve angle as I already have the short block. Thanks for all and any help.

The 230 should work fine on the large pump gas motor. You might have them cleaned up a little. You'll see that they make good power and the volume is about right for something running up around 6500 to 6800 RPM.

Thanks Mike for the input. I have been looking over many different heads lately and am still wondering if there is something else out there that would perform better than what I have. This is the combo that I ran last year 434sbc Motown block Ohio Crankshaft built with their crank and rods J&E pistons Comp solid roller cam.630 lift int .630 lift ex with 1.5 rocker int opens 44 close 76 ex opens 80 closes 48 duration @.050 int 264 ex 270 lobe sep is 106, heads are Dart Pro 1 230 and flow 129@200 184@300 231@400 271@500 288@550 296@600 301@650 308@700 intake and the exhaust is 115@200 158@300 185@400 199@500 202@550 205@600 207@650 207@700, I have a set of Jesel shaft rockers 1.5 ratio a Motown intake and a 1050 Dominator with 1 7/8 headser with 3.5 collector and exhaust. The car is a 79' Malibu the weighs 3350 has a 350th with a Midwest converter @4200 and a 9" with 3.70 gear and a 28X11.5 Hoosier. The best the car has done to date was 10.82@123 with a 1.46 60ft and ran 6.80@100 in the 1/8. I feel that this combo is missing something big time and should be running much faster. If you see anything that looks misplaced please feel free to let me know and I am willing to try just about anything at this point. Thank you once again for all of your help.

are those real flow numbers..or off of a website? I run that same cam in a 406. I degreed it and came up with 107.5LSA. My 406 is an under achiever too. I run Dart IE 230's, they are supposed to flow like the Pro1's. I am changing heads soon and when I do I will flow the Darts to see how close they are to the WEB stats. I run a 5000 stall at 3750lbs and run 11.3 at 4000'DA

The flow numbers were sent to me by a Dart rep and he says they are with a 4.155 bore @28" of water. I am considering changing mine also but am up in the air as to witch heads are better than these? I have lokked at the Brodix 18X heads but am not sure if I have to chang my pistons for them or not and am really not wanting to do that. I would rather stay with a standard 23* head with stock valve spacing since I have a rather expencive set of rockers that I don't want to give up.n Are ther any RR heads out there that flow big numbers? If so I am open to an intake change.
As for your 406 a friend of mine has one with Edelbrock Victor Jr. heads and it runs harder than my engine. You may want to check into them.

I ordered a set of Mike Starks new sbc 23 degree heads. They are supposed to flow close to the Dart numbers, but are only 215cc intake runner.

Guys, I know most people don't give them much credit, but I really like the Canfields. A friend of mine had the 220s that were mildly ported on a 406 in a 68 camaro that weighed 3000+ and he was going 6.20s at like 106 in the 1/8th on motor, low 5.80s @ 116-118 on a 175 shot spinning badly. I have the 195cc Canfields that were ported by Mike on my 10.7:1 355. I can't remember all the flow #s but he got like 257@.400, 301 @ .600 and 308 @ .700 on the intake and something like 218 @ .600 on the exhaust out of them with an intake port around 210-212cc. It's gone 6.91 @ 101 mph at ~3100 lbs. with a converter that's way too tight. Cam is a Lunati (former UltraDyne grind) .626/.626, 255/263 @ .050 on 109 ls, Victor jr. intake also ported by Mike.
For what it's worth, is everything else on the car up to par? Fuel system, electrical system? My alternator wasn't charging right and I picked up 4 mph just by putting a new alternator and getting my electrical up to par.
With that said, I doubt the ported Canfields would be any better than ported Darts. Have mike work yours over, he does real nice work. Also, double check for other problems you could be having.

Jason, I would simply send the heads to Mike for a port job. I have a set of Pro-1 215's worked by Mike on my 12.5:1 422sbc and it runs 10.20's @3550lbs in good air. I shift at 7200 and cross at 7200. I'm in the middle of a cam change right now looking for more improvements.

JDW...sounds like a great combo you've come up with on the 422ci. I am building my first big inch small block in the form of a Bowtie 421. I may be going a little different direction as you with a streetable pump gas motor in mind, but would like to know some details of your combo and ask some questions about the buildup if you don't mind sharing. You can e-mail me at torqjunki@charter.net Thanks Dave

Mike fully ported a set of the 230 Pro-1's for me several years ago, I think they flowed over 315 at .700. Bottom line is I have won a lot of races with these in heads up sand drag competition where 23 degree heads are all that is allowed. 699 hp in a 13.8 to 1 406. ;D
